Max is an aspiring Tamer, and a neighbor and friend of the player character. An arrogant and competitive child, they serve as the player's rival throughout the game.

Appearance

Max has light turquoise hair with a streak of white on the left, and round, gold eyes. They wear a white tank top with a black undershirt, as well as yellow shorts and a red backpack. They have a slender frame and are approximately the same height as the player character. Max is portrayed as a young person aged somewhere between 12 and 14.

Personality

Max is arrogant, cocky, and competitive, and they do everything they can to try and be a better Tamer than the player at every opportunity. This largely stems from the player being Professor Konstantinos' favorite instead of them. They seem to be obsessed with power, and are willing even to join the forces of evil if it means acquiring it and being able to best the player.

Story

Max is one of the first characters encountered at the start of the game. Max and the player character both celebrate their Apprentice's Eve on the same day and gather with Prof. Konstantinos before heading to the Accademia. After the player character receives a Temtem at Prof. Konstantinos' lab, Max suggests having a duel to see who's the better Tamer. However, they easily defeat the player with their Digital Temtem. They are briefly encountered again at the Academia in Briçal de Mar, reaffirming that they will be a better Tamer than the player.

After completing the island of Zadar, Max appears again before the player boards the Narwhal, challenging them to another battle. They are not seen again for some time.

Max is next encountered at the Kakama Cenote in Tucma, disguised as the player and attempting to steal Shuine's Horn. It is revealed that they have joined Clan Belsoto, and they were the one committing all the crimes in Quetzal that the player was framed for. After a battle, the player unsuccessfully attempts to convince Max to leave Clan Belsotto, and they smoke bomb away.

Max briefly appears again on the road through Kupeleleza, dressed with a hoodie to avoid being identified. They attempt to recruit the player to Clan Belsoto's side, but the player refuses. Max is disappointed, but states that they believe the player will eventually see eye to eye with them and change sides, since the Belsoto have technological advantages and greater power and freedom to use their Temtem. They disappear without a fight.

The final encounter with Max occurs during the Resistance's raid on Uhuru in Kisiwa. They challenge the player to a battle to stop them from opening the gates, but the player wins and manages to let the Resistance forces into the city. Max reports back to General X with their failure, who is furious that they've been holding back from their orders to kill the Resistance members and are unwilling to spill blood with their Temtem. The player shows up soon after, and Max decides to renounce their allegiance to Clan Belsoto, stating that General X has taken things a step too far. Outraged, General X shoves Max off the ledge of the port. Their true fate is unknown as of Early Access 0.7, but the player character and all others believe that they are dead.

Trivia

• Prior to Alpha 0.8.0, Max was the only tamer who had a Luma Temtem on their team and was not a Dojo Leader.
• Max shares part of their team with the Belsoto leaders. They, Lady Lottie, and an unnamed Belsoto lieutenant all use Pocus, and Max and Dr. Hamijo are the only tamers encountered prior to reaching Cipanku to use a Digital Temtem, both using Zaobian. Max also uses Barnshe, also used by Lottie; Saipat, also used by Hamijo; Raican, also used by Lottie and General X; and Gazuma, also used by Hamijo and General X, though Max never uses all of these Temtem all at once.
  • When the player defeats Max in Arissola, Max says that "He" said they "would be invincible with this Digital Temtem," but doesn't specify who. Given that Max and Hamijo are the only tamers before Cipanku to use a Digital Temtem, and that the two of them share a large portion of their team (both using Gazuma, Saipat, and Zaobian), it is possible that Dr. Hamijo is the mysterious Tamer that gave Max their Oree.
